In a pivotal federal court appearance, Google CEO Sundar Pichai pushed back against the U.S. Justice Department’s proposals to limit Google’s search engine dominance. Labeling the DOJ’s suggestion to share search data with rivals as “extraordinary,” Pichai argued it would force the company to give up its core intellectual property—undermining decades of innovation and future investment.
The remedies trial follows a prior ruling that Google illegally maintained a monopoly in online search. Proposed measures include halting payments to device makers like Apple and Samsung for default placement and potentially spinning off Chrome, which the DOJ says reinforces Google’s ad dominance through data collection.
The trial also highlighted how Google’s control of search may give it an unfair edge in AI, including its Gemini chatbot. Pichai emphasized Google's $49 billion AI investment and pointed to competitors like ChatGPT as proof of a competitive market. Closing arguments are expected in May, with a ruling anticipated by August.
