Sony–Tata Play Dispute Intensifies as Tribunal Cuts Payment to ₹40 Cr

The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) has granted Tata Play interim relief in its legal battle with Culver Max Entertainment (Sony), slashing a ₹128.42 crore payment demand to ₹40 crore. The dispute arose from a May 2025 claim by Sony over unpaid dues, which Tata Play called inflated and procedurally flawed.

Tata Play recently dropped Sony channels amid resistance to a proposed 10–15% fee hike. Arguing its case, Tata Play cited ₹4,000 crore paid over a decade and regulatory violations by Sony.

TDSAT found merit in Tata Play’s stance, staying the full demand. The next hearing is set for July 23. Meanwhile, subscribers face altered channel packs, as the clash underscores growing tensions in India’s traditional TV space amid OTT disruption.
