EU issues hefty penalties on Apple, Meta for digital competition violations

The European Union has fined Apple €500 million and Meta €200 million for violating digital competition rules under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). Apple’s fine stems from preventing app developers from informing users about cheaper purchasing options outside its App Store. Meta’s penalty is due to its policy of forcing Facebook and Instagram users to either accept personalized ads or pay a subscription fee to avoid them.

These fines are part of the EU's ongoing efforts to curb the power of large tech companies, ensuring more competition and user choice. The DMA aims to give users control over their data and allow businesses to communicate freely. Both Apple and Meta have expressed dissatisfaction, with Apple claiming it was unfairly targeted. The penalties mark a shift toward stricter regulation of Big Tech in Europe.
