Google Uses AI to Tackle Harmful Ads, But Gaps Remain

Google’s 2024 Ads Safety Report shows increased use of AI, especially Large Language Models, to detect and prevent policy violations. In 2024, 5.1 billion ads were removed, 9.1 billion restricted, and 39.2 million advertiser accounts suspended—many before ads went live. AI flagged 97% of publisher pages for violations and now aids in verifying advertiser identities. Verified advertisers account for over 90% of ads on the platform. Scam ads, often using AI-generated impersonations, led to over 700,000 account suspensions and a 90% drop in user complaints. Despite this progress, lapses persist, including political misinformation and harmful content monetization. The report emphasizes that AI-driven ad safety requires ongoing improvement, transparency, and industry collaboration to be truly effective.
